A Brief History of Evans Colorado
Evans itself is an old town that’s gone through many changes over the past 150+ years. It was first established in 1867, making it the oldest town remaining in the area.
Named for the second Territorial Governor of Colorado, John Evans, the town became a transportation hub after the Denver Pacific Railroad was built between Cheyenne and Denver.
In 1871, 400 settlers from the St. Louis-Western Colony arrived. Evans soon became known as a rowdy supply town and place to stop on the highway. Evans became known as the “Queen City of the Platte.” It was even the Weld County seat before raiders from the temperance colony of Greeley stole the county records and burnt down the courthouse.
In spite of its rough reputation, Evans has always taken education seriously. The first brick schoolhouse in the county was built here in 1874, and a College was opened in 1877.
Today, Evans is a hot spot for the growing energy boom in Weld County. Over the past few years, several companies specializing in oil and gas exploration have set up their operations in Evans, providing a solid economic nucleus for further expansion.
