Inside the ShortStop Shell station and convenience store at the corner of 23rd Ave. and 37th St. in Evans is a restaurant. It’s not a typical convenience store restaurant. It’s Uncle Willy’s and it was voted Best Fried Chicken in Northern Colorado in 2017.

Uncle Willy’s has a lot more than fried chicken. Pick up a breakfast sandwich, biscuits and gravy or burrito on your way to work. Lunch and dinner options include BBQ sandwiches, burgers, gyros, Coney Island style Uncle Willy dogs, chicken tenders and, of course, their famous fried chicken.

Uncle Willy’s smokes their brisket and pork for burritos and sandwiches and makes their barbeque sauce. They have potato salad, hash browns, beans and coleslaw among their many sides and don’t forget the Rocky Mountain Oysters.  Evans Short Stop is one of six gas stations owned by the Dageenakis family. The other five are in Boulder and while they do serve some food, only the Evans location has a full menu. You might recognize manager Cathy Harrison from her 17 years as Bob Boswell’s right hand at Western Sizzlin’. Cathy knows food and she adapted the much-missed fried chicken recipe from her previous job.
She says she gets lots of comments about the food being “surprisingly good for a convenience store.” But she doesn’t care because those comments turn into regular customers and referrals. Uncle Willy’s can also cater a party if you give them advance notice. Food is cooked in small batches so it’s always fresh. In a hurry? Try the “Grab and Go” display. There are tables inside. There is also a drive up or you can have it delivered by Order Up. There is a mobile app by Chow Now which allows you to order and pick up. For a limited time you can use their app and get $2 off your first order. Cathy has extended that offer to anyone who mentions this article through the month of April. Hours are 5 am to 8 pm. Grab & Go when you’re in a hurry for good food
